When I was a kid, I loved to go to my Grandmother's(Aaita) place. Summer vacation was apt for going there as we use to get a month long vacation from school. It was a place amidst nature.
The entrance gate made of bamboos is called "Nongola", A huge compound with a beautiful home was the place where we enjoyed our holidays.
The first thing one will notice is the prayer house called "Guxain Ghor or Naamghar" , where my Aaita used to do her daily prayers to the almighty at the wee hours of the morning. After that Aaita used to take out milk from the cow in that small aluminum bucket, picture of which is still fresh in my mind.
A Paddy storage godown called "Bhoral ghor" is an essential part of a village home. There was a "Dheki" near Bhoral ghor. It is used by the women of the house for grinding and threshing of rice grains. The rice flour made by this process is later used for preparing different Assamese delicacies called "Pithaa".
In the backyard there was a garden full of vegetables and fruits i.e. called "Xakoni Bari". I can remember a Bio-gas system called "Gobar gas machine", which is used to generate gas from cowdung.
Beside the vegetable garden, there was a pond with lots of fishes. Whenever we visited them, they use to send their helpers for fishing.
The electricity was so unstable there that we hardly get a chance to watch TV. But we never felt the need of glueing to the television sets. In day time we were busy playing here & there. During the evening hours, since electricity always plays peekaboo there, we loved to sit in the open area and listen to Grandma's tale. Laughing at my uncle's jokes and giving answers to his riddles was a fun part of the evening.
Going to the village home for our holidays was one of the best thing for us as kids. We always eagerly wait for summer vacation of school to come so that we can go there. Meeting cousins was a huge attraction of the holidays.
As we all grew up, we were busy in our schools, colleges, extra curricular activities so much that the frequency of visiting Grandparents became less day by day.
I still miss the quiet environment there. The chirping of birds, whistling sound of crickets, smell of cowdung, 'moo' sound of cows all the time, old melodies playing in the radio, sounds of bell of bicycle etc. etc. I miss Everything. This city chaos has taken us away from nature.
But whenever I get an opportunity, I do visit my grandma's home. Many things has changed during all these years as technology has affected the villages too. The one thing that hasn't changed is the love and affection we get from Grandma. Love you Aaita. May God bless you with his choicest blessings.
